Now you see it…
Now you don’t. In my case, it’s a little bit the other way around. Say what, you ask? Let me explain. Seems I am not seeing things and then, all of a sudden, I do! Kid you not. If you all remember, I had the heart surgery last year and one of the complications turned out to be a mini-stroke which knocked out some vision in the lower half of my left eye (it’s sort of like looking through a cloth, you can see something but it is not clear). Anyway, I’ve adjusted to that for the most part, I need to wear glasses to see things up close and/or read (which I was doing on a slightly lesser level already) and it got to the point where my other eye has tried to pick up the pace, although I am quite sure my left eye was my dominant one, which when you think about it, all makes sense in the fact that I need to rely on glasses a bit more than I ever had in the past. I also am very much able to everything I used to be able to do so all good there, right?
Turns out that is a yes and no answer, which really only came to light in the last couple days. If you’ve been following our Pulp Improvement updates, you’d see we are deep into the Pulp Porch project and recently began installing our interior finish out wood, which are tongue and groove planks that have a v-notch down the center (and with the T&G give it a look of a groove every 3 inches or so). Very nice looking and it is the closest match I could find to some of the existing siding that we are keeping. Again, all good, right? So here’s the rub, a couple times the first day I noticed I had cut the planks on the wrong side, you see there needs to be an angle cut on top for the slant of the roof and the v-notch needs to be on the side facing the space so the two need to jive with each other. Anyway, I’d make my cut, bring the piece up for install and then notice that the angle was the wrong way, as in, I had laid the board down on the saw, looked straight at it, and then completely cut it essentially upside down, thinking the groove was facing me. Weird right? After the 4th time I just started cursing myself out and thinking maybe I am just rushing a little too fast to get it done, etc., etc.
The next day I went out to inspect my work and noticed I had actually gone and installed a full 10 foot vertical board with the v-notch on the wrong side. Mind you, I not only looked at it the day before (and took pictures), I was, in fact, quite happy with my work! So, you ask, what does this all mean? Well what I think is happening is that my eye that had the mini-stroke and was my dominant eye, it is no longer able to be that eye, so what is registering in my brain is a combination of a left and right eye corrected version of what it thinks it is seeing, aka, not actually seeing the line but thinking it did. Again, weird but I think now that I have kind of figured this one out, maybe it starts correcting itself. And if not, I do find it a bit amusing and I am sure I will look back and laugh in the future (trust me, not until I fix the backward board)!
Time to get some window trim wood and get busy. See you all next week!
